Are you ready to blast off into a universe of fun and creativity? An outer space party is a fantastic way to entertain kids and adults alike, sparking wonder and excitement for your little astronauts. My oldest son has always been fascinated by all things space—he can even recite the planets in order! So, naturally, his sixth birthday had to be celebrated among the stars. If you’re dreaming of turning your child’s special day into an out-of-this-world adventure, I’ve got some fun decor ideas and treats that will wow your guests and make lasting memories.

Decor Ideas to Make Your Celebration Shine!

Kick off your outer space party with themed invitations that set the mood right from the start. Use fun space-related phrases like “Join us on a journey through the stars!” to get your guests excited. Digital invitations are a great, easy option—they can be personalized with glowing stars and cosmic images. I personally designed and printed ours using Canva to add that extra special touch.

Starry Backdrops and Atmosphere

Transform your party space into a galaxy—whether outside in the backyard or indoors. A backyard can become a planetary playground with minimal effort, weather permitting, while indoors, darken the room and add glow-in-the-dark stars to create a truly cosmic atmosphere. For my son’s winter birthday, we chose Urban Air Trampoline Park, where black lights, strobes, and lasers turn the space into a mesmerizing glow-in-the-dark adventure, making it the perfect setting for a fun and memorable outer space celebration.

Outer Space Party Plates & Pop Rocks Party Favors

Start with vibrant, space-themed plates and napkins featuring planets, stars, and rockets to add a fun touch to your table. Sprinkle star and planet-shaped confetti to create a magical, space dust effect. For our party, we decorated with homemade cupcakes, confetti, and Rocket Plates. For party favors, we included  Pop Rocks for a delightful burst of flavor—easily available through my affiliate links.

Homemade Cake & Cupcakes and Toppers

Nothing says celebration like delicious cupcakes! I baked homemade cupcakes and decorated them with galaxy sprinkles to mimic twinkling stars, adding planet toppers I crafted with my Cricut Maker  using matching invitation designs and gold and silver foil paper for stars. For the cake and cupcakes, I made dye-free black icing that tasted like an Oreo cookie—sweet, fun, and mess-free for little mouths.

While I’m not a professional baker, I love creating homemade treats for my kids’ special days, and decorating allows for endless creativity. To really enhance the theme, I added out-of-this-world cake sprinkles , which you can find through my Amazon affiliate link!

Solar System Balloon Decor

Balloons are a must-have for any outer space party, and the options are endless! Mix metallic silver, deep blue, and vibrant colors to represent planets, or find star-shaped balloons and inflatable rockets to add to the fun. You can arrange them into bouquets or create a stunning balloon arch to make your party truly pop. Since my son loves all the planets, we found mylar planet balloons online and made a helium bouquet to tie into the space theme.

Colorful space-themed balloons cluster in a bright indoor setting with orange and blue walls. Text on the glass door reads "Urban 2."

I also created a 6-foot garland to hang at home, adding a personal and festive touch to the celebration. It’s perfect for photo backdrops or simply decorating the space to make the day feel even more special. You can purchase the planet balloons using my Amazon affiliate link: Planet Balloons—and with a little creativity, they’ll help bring your outer space theme to life in a big way!
